Most patients will undergo a breast-conserving procedure that eliminates unhealthy tissues while preserving as much of the original tissue as possible. Breast-conserving surgery is accompanied by postoperative radiation to achieve the same cancer remission results with improved cosmesis. Some patients with more advanced disease or those at a higher risk will have to opt for a mastectomy to remove the entire breast. Reconstruction can be performed for most patients and can result in a more natural appearance. Lymph node biopsy is generally performed at the time of mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery.
The extensiveness of a particular procedure is highly dependent on the advancement of the disease. Prior to your surgery, our doctor will recommend which operation will work best for you and what options you have regarding reconstruction. As with other forms of cancer, there is a risk of redevelopment. Patients who have had breast surgery for cancer are recommended to continue regular screenings. If you have any questions or concerns, talk with your physician to thoroughly educate yourself on your condition. Your healthcare provider is the best source of information.
