02 / Why Sulphur Surgical

The clinic your grandmother trusted — with the equipment of a major hospital.

For 50 years, families in Calcasieu Parish have walked into the same office on Cypress Street for everything from gallbladders to colonoscopies. Sulphur Surgical Clinic is still owned and run by the same surgical group — now in its second generation, with an in-house vein center added to the practice.

“We do what a big-city surgical group does, with the schedule and the bedside manner of a small-town clinic.”

General Surgery S/01 — S/10

S/01
Hernia Repair
Inguinal · femoral · umbilical · hiatal · incisional
+

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or fatty tissue protrudes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or fascia. Caused by muscle weakness, heavy lifting, or persistent coughing — hernias do not resolve on their own.

How we repair it
  • Traditional open repair through a small incision near the hernia site, sometimes reinforced with mesh.
  • Laparoscopic repair with several small incisions and specialized tools — reduced pain, faster recovery.

S/02
Colorectal Surgery
Cancer · diverticulitis · Crohn's · hemorrhoids · polyps
+

For diseases like colon cancer, diverticulitis, and Crohn's that cause perforation or obstruction of the lower intestinal tract. Colon resection — removing the diseased segment and reconnecting the remaining colon — is the primary procedure and is typically performed laparoscopically with an average 2–4 day hospital stay.

Less severe conditions like hemorrhoids, fissures, polyps, and rectal prolapse are treated with minor in-office procedures. A colonoscopy is generally recommended beforehand for diagnostic purposes.

S/03
Anti-Reflux Surgery
Laparoscopic fundoplication for severe GERD
+

For patients whose heartburn, chest pain, and acid regurgitation aren't controlled with diet changes or medication. Fundoplication wraps the top of the stomach around the end of the esophagus and sutures them together — reinforcing the barrier between the esophagus and stomach acid.

Performed laparoscopically through small incisions, often combined with a hiatal hernia repair. Most patients spend one night in the hospital and experience immediate relief.

S/04
Breast Surgery
Breast-conserving · mastectomy · biopsy · reconstruction
+

Most patients undergo a breast-conserving procedure that removes unhealthy tissue while preserving as much of the original breast as possible — followed by post-operative radiation. For more advanced disease or higher-risk patients, mastectomy with reconstruction may be recommended.

Lymph node biopsy is generally performed at the time of surgery. Continued regular screenings are recommended after treatment.

S/05
Endoscopy & Colonoscopy
Diagnostic upper GI & lower GI procedures, IV sedation
+

An endoscopy uses a flexible tube with a light and camera to inspect inside the body — diagnosing ulcers, cancer, polyps, and GI bleeding. IV sedation is administered so patients are asleep and remember nothing about the procedure.

Two procedures
  • Upper endoscopy (EGD): examines esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. ~10–15 minutes.
  • Colonoscopy: examines colon and large intestine. ~20 minutes; patients generally go home 30 minutes after.

Screening colonoscopy is recommended starting at age 45, or earlier for those at high risk for colorectal cancer.

AI Endoscopy
Real-time AI imaging support for higher polyp detection
+

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. — yet one of the most preventable when caught early. AI-assisted endoscopy works as a second set of eyes alongside the surgeon, analyzing the live video feed in real time to highlight areas that may contain polyps or abnormalities.

The procedure itself is unchanged — AI does not act autonomously. It is strictly used to study the feed and flag risk areas, which has been shown to increase adenoma detection rates and support earlier diagnosis.

S/07
Thyroid Surgery
Lobectomy · total thyroidectomy · nodule evaluation
+

For hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, suspicious nodules, and large symptomatic goiters. Diagnosed with fine-needle aspiration biopsy to determine the extent of surgery required.

Two approaches
  • Lobectomy: removal of one thyroid lobe.
  • Total thyroidectomy: removal of the entire gland.

Most patients with significant removal will require regular thyroid hormone replacement. Hoarseness is common and may last several weeks.

S/08
Gallbladder Removal
Mini-cholecystectomy & laparoscopic cholecystectomy
+

For gallstones causing chronic pain, bloating, nausea, or bile blockage that diet and lifestyle changes haven't resolved.

Two minimally-invasive options
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy — four small incisions, narrow scope, camera-guided removal.
  • Mini-cholecystectomy — a single 2–3″ incision below the right ribs, faster recovery, fewer complications.

S/09
Vasectomy
No-scalpel technique · IV sedation at WCCH · >99% effective
+

A permanent form of male birth control. The vas deferens — the tubes that carry sperm — are cut or clamped so semen no longer contains sperm.

We perform the no-scalpel vasectomy at West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital. Most patients have IV sedation for comfort; general anesthesia is available for those who prefer it. The technique uses a single small puncture rather than a traditional incision — no stitches, virtually no scarring, faster recovery than traditional approaches. Some other regional hospital systems do not perform vasectomies, which makes Sulphur Surgical Clinic one of the few local options in Southwest Louisiana.

S/10
Liver Disease Screening
Liver elastography for fatty liver (MASLD/NAFLD)
+

Fatty liver disease develops quietly — risk factors include obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, metabolic syndrome, and excessive alcohol consumption. Left undetected it can progress to cirrhosis or liver failure.

Liver elastography is a painless, non-invasive technique that measures liver firmness to detect fibrosis or cirrhosis — providing real-time insights without a biopsy. Often covered by insurance.

The Vein Center V/01 — V/06

V/01
EVLT — Endovenous Laser Therapy
Minimally-invasive treatment for varicose veins
+

A catheter is inserted into the leg near the knee, and a laser fiber is guided through it. Numbing medication is administered along the catheter's path for comfort. The laser's heat seals the varicose vein and redirects blood flow to healthier veins — reducing the appearance and symptoms of varicose veins.

V/02
Varithena Foam Sclerotherapy
One or two needle sticks, under one hour, no incisions
+

A specialized medical-grade foam is injected into the affected veins, causing them to close. Typically requires only one or two needle sticks — no incisions, no stitches. Treatment is usually completed in less than an hour, and most patients see results after a single session. In clinical trials, only 4% of patients reported any discomfort at the injection site.

V/03
Micro-Phlebectomy
Removal of superficial bulging veins, local anesthesia
+

Tiny incisions are made along the affected vein and specialized hooks carefully extract it. Quick outpatient procedure requiring only local anesthesia, with minimal scarring — effectively addressing bulging superficial varicose veins.

V/04
In-Office Vein Ultrasound
Painless, non-invasive blood-flow evaluation
+

A quick, non-invasive ultrasound that uses sound waves to evaluate blood flow and detect varicose veins, venous insufficiency, or clots. Painless, no downtime, and may be performed lying down, sitting, or standing for the best view. Results are often immediate — helping us create a personalized treatment plan and prevent complications like DVT or venous ulcers.

V/05
Vein Ligation & Stripping
Surgical treatment for severe varicose veins
+

For severe varicose veins where less-invasive treatments aren't sufficient. The affected vein is tied off (ligation) and removed (stripping) through small incisions — effective in reducing symptoms and preventing complications associated with chronic venous insufficiency.

V/06
Asclera
FDA-approved injection for spider & small varicose veins
+

An FDA-approved injectable sclerosant solution that causes the targeted veins to collapse and fade over time. A safe, minimally-invasive option for improving the appearance of spider veins and small varicose veins — quick treatment with little to no downtime.
